After many years of painting and exploring nearly all ways of
approaching art; and after teaching all levels of painting and drawing, I have
settled in to painting with a new quietude and assurance. Responding to the
world around me, I play, twist, push and pull according to how things feel;
grabbing the colors and the amount of paint that feel right. I look always for
a poetry, for the intimation of a story, a hint of a feeling. I'm
fascinated by the poetic borderline just short of description, where
possibility still reigns.
I like a painting I can dream over and imagine what is
happening; that I can come back to time after time and feel and see something a
bit different, imagine a different story. When I was a kid, my parents had a
reproduction of a painting hanging over our sofa. It was a long, horizontal
landscape of road. There was a man walking up that road, or down it, and I used
to look at it and dream and wonder, “Where is he going?” “Where did he come
from?” “Is he carrying something home for his family?”
